While applying for a job, you send your resume to the prospective employer as your representative.It thus largely depends on the affectivity of your resume, whether you will get the awaited interview call or not. Here is a checklist for your resume to test and verify if you are missing something:
- First of all draft a rough resume body referring to the latest template or a general template.
- Review various resume formats and choose the one that would suit the profile and industry, you are applying for. And prepare your final resume accordingly.
- Your objective must communicate clearly and precisely that how you are right for the job.
- Write down your ten greatest achievements before you start writing your resume. Do not forget to highlight and establish your good worthiness.
- Prioritize your details and customize your resume to match the profile you are applying for.
- Link your skills and abilities to the job profile you are applying for.
- Use the key words of the job description, as that will win you the reader’s attention and preference.
- Proofread your resume and there is no grammatical &/or writing errors.
- Use only business/formal letter format to write your resume.
- Write in professional business language even while emailing. Avoid using chat language, or shorthand.
- Use readable and general fonts’ style, like Times New Roman, Arial, Verdana, etc.).
- Use font sizes ranging from 11 to 14 and it should be consistent throughout the letter. And it should as well be consistent in your cover letter.
- Avoid using jargons or alien languages or irrelevant examples, etc…
- Keep your resume short, crisp and to the point.
- Set margins to approximately 1 inch on all sides and single space the letter. Leave one ‘enter’ space between your each section, like contact information, the date, etc…
- Make a good presentation of your resume, not jumble the information. Moreover its commonly said, that what is seen only sells.
- Use high quality paper for your cover letter (like you can laser print it), just as you do your resume.
- Research about the trend and preference of the prospective employer, so that you can personalize and tailor your resume accordingly.
- Refrain using letterhead from your current employer to write your resume and other such papers. To pull attention though you can try using bigger size papers or color papers, but do not get too off track in doing so.
- While sending your resume as an email attachment, the file name must be professional preferably your own name or Resume or CV, etc…
- Avoid using a generic format for every employer, you apply with. Instead use a personalized and customized resume in each case.
- Start the resume with your contact details.
- The contact details must be complete and current through which the employer could reach you.
- Sign your resume, especially while submitting it as a hard copy.
- All the essential details starting from your address to your employer’s & employment details must be clear, accurate and updated.
- Do not forget to include the date.
- Don’t forget to proofread you resume.
- Get your resume reviewed by an expert professional and get a second advice thereby upon its affectivity for your purpose.
- Don’t stretch the resume more than 3 pages, in fact prefer to keep it in 2 pages. Provide only the relevant and essential details in each section and do not write stories about your education or experience, etc.
